SKYINK

An animated travel map video, made from your stops.

Put the places of your trip in order and Sky İnk draws the route over a 3D globe and flies it: a short vertical film of the whole journey — by plane, by train, by car, by ship or on foot — ready to share.

AMSTERDAM → BARCELONA → IBIZA → PALERMO → NAPLES → AMSTERDAM

How it works

  1. Pick your stops. Search airports, cities and towns, or put the crosshair on any point of the earth. Up to eight places, in the order you went.
  2. Say how each leg travels. The trip above flies to Barcelona, sails to Ibiza, Palermo and Naples, and drives home to Amsterdam. Each leg is drawn the way it was travelled: a flight arcs between its airports, a train ride and a drive cross the land, a sea crossing keeps to the shipping lanes.
  3. Watch it fly, then send it. The camera lifts off from the first stop, follows the route and settles into the last. Vertical for the feed, square, or wide; saved to Photos on iPhone, downloaded from the studio in a browser.

What the film shows

The earth from above, the route drawn as the camera goes, a plane, a train or a car on each leg, the name of each place as it arrives, and at the end the whole journey in one pull-back to the globe. It is a film of the trip, not a screen recording of a map.

The look

Four looks for the earth: Satellite, NASA's photograph of the planet; Terrain, its relief in colour; Blueprint, the relief in two blues; and Day, a map in a day map's colours, drawn from open data. Each look has its own close-up for the start and the end of a leg; the route's colour and width are yours to set, and a look you like is kept for the next film.

Where to make it

On iPhone — the Sky İnk app, on the App Store: the film renders on the phone and is saved to Photos; nothing is uploaded. In your browser — the studio at skyink.co, on a phone or a desktop: the film renders on our server and is yours to download for a week. Building a route works without an account; keeping things — the film, a look, a favourite stop — asks you to sign in, with Apple, with Google or with an email link. There is no password.
